Redesigned ESPNdeportes.com Debuts Today

Spanish-speaking sports fans will notice something different today when they visit ESPNdeportes.com:

Something obvious — The redesigned site features a sleeker interface and the latest in video, search, personalization and social media.  See more details in the release here.

Something not so obvious — Unless you’ve been able to log onto ESPNdeportes.com from different parts of the Western Hemisphere, you probably have not noticed the unique aspect – the regionalization of five homepages across international borders.  They include: (1) U.S. Hispanic, (2) Mexico & Central America, (3) Southern Cone of Argentina, Uruguay & Paraguay, (4) Andean Nations of Colombia, Peru, Ecuador & Chile and (5) Venezuela & the Caribbean.

ESPNdeportes.com recognizes the user’s location and delivers the relevant version of the site.  Although millions of fans the world over share a language – Spanish – their interests are widely disparate.

For example, fans in Venezuela receive coverage on their hometown pitching ace Francisco Rodriguez on the homepage.  But in Argentina, they won’t find anything on K-Rod — or baseball, for that matter — on their homepage because of the local popularity of tennis.

Did You Know? — The redesign comes on the heels of a recent report by comScore on the tremendous growth among U.S. Hispanic Internet users, a demo that is outpacing the total U.S. online population by 50 percent.  Total amount of time online by Hispanics has increased 6.9 percent, and total pages consumed grew six percent compared to last year.  Those numbers are, 3.9 and 3.6 times faster than the total U.S. online population, respectively.
